1. TOEFL IBT (Internet-Based Test)
  • Format: Computer-based test taken online at designated test centers.
a. Reading Section
  • Content: Includes 3 to 4 passages from academic texts, each followed by questions.
  • Duration: 54 to 72 minutes.
  • Skills Assessed: Ability to understand, interpret, and analyze written texts.
b. Listening Section
  • Content: Consists of 6 to 9 listening passages, including lectures and conversations, with questions following each passage.
  • Duration: 41 to 57 minutes.
  • Skills Assessed: Ability to understand spoken English in academic and everyday contexts.
c. Speaking Section
  • Content: Includes 6 tasks that require you to speak into a microphone. The tasks are divided into independent and integrated tasks.
  • Duration: 17 minutes.
  • Skills Assessed: Ability to communicate effectively in spoken English, including expressing opinions and summarizing information.
d. Writing Section
  • Content:  Includes 2 tasks: one integrated task (writing based on reading and listening) and one independent task (writing an essay based on a prompt).
  • Duration: 50 minutes.
  • Skills Assessed: Ability to write clear and organized essays in English, including constructing arguments and expressing ideas.
  • Total Test Duration: Approximately 3 hours.
2.TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based Test)
  • Format: Paper-based test used primarily in regions where the iBT is not available.
a. Listening Comprehension
  • Content: 50 questions based on conversations and lectures.
  • Duration: 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Skills Assessed: Understanding spoken English.
b. Structure and Written Expression
  • Content: 40 questions on grammar and sentence structure.
  • Duration: 25 minutes.
  • Skills Assessed: Understanding of English grammar and sentence structure.
c. Reading Comprehension
  • Content: 50 questions based on reading passages.
  • Duration: 35 minutes.
  • Skills Assessed: Ability to understand and analyze written English.
d. Writing (Essay)
  • Content: One essay based on a prompt.
  • Duration: 30 minutes.
  • Skills Assessed: Ability to write an organized essay.
  • Total Test Duration: Approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Scoring

  • TOEFL iBT: Scores are reported on a scale of 0 to 120, with each section scored from 0 to 30. The total score is the sum of the scores from all four sections.
  • TOEFL PBT: Scores are reported on a scale of 310 to 677, with separate scores for each section and a total score.

Registration

  • How to Register: Registration is done online through the ETS (Educational Testing Service) website. You need to create an ETS account, select a test date and location, and pay the registration fee.
  • Fees: Vary by location, typically around $200 to $250. Check the ETS website for the most current fee structure.
  • Test Dates: TOEFL iBT is offered on multiple dates throughout the year at various test centers worldwide.

Preparation

  1. Official Preparation Materials: Use TOEFL preparation guides and practice tests available from ETS.
