  1. Speaking & Writing:
    • Duration: About 77-93 minutes.
    • Format:
      • Speaking:
        • Personal Introduction: A brief introduction where you speak about yourself.
        • Read Aloud: Read a passage aloud.
        • Repeat Sentence: Listen to a sentence and repeat it exactly.
        • Describe Image: Describe an image (graph, chart, or picture).
        • Re-tell Lecture: Listen to a lecture and summarize it in your own words.
        • Answer Short Question: Respond to a question with a single word or a few words.
      • Writing:
        • Summarize Written Text: Write a summary of a given text in one sentence.
        • Essay: Write an essay in response to a prompt on a given topic.
    • Purpose: Evaluates your ability to communicate effectively in both spoken and written English.
  2. Reading:
    • Duration: About 32-41 minutes.
    • Format:
      • Multiple-choice, Choose Single Answer: Select one correct answer from a list of options.
      • Multiple-choice, Choose Multiple Answers: Select multiple correct answers from a list of options.
      • Re-order Paragraphs: Arrange a set of jumbled paragraphs in the correct order.
      • Fill in the Blanks: Complete a passage with missing words.
      • Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks: Similar to the above but with additional writing tasks.
    • Purpose: Tests your ability to understand and interpret written texts in various formats.
  3. Listening:
    • Duration: About 45-57 minutes.
    • Format:
      • Summarize Spoken Text: Listen to a recording and summarize it in a written form.
      • Multiple-choice, Choose Single Answer: Listen to a recording and choose the correct answer from options.
      • Multiple-choice, Choose Multiple Answers: Listen and select multiple correct answers.
      • Fill in the Blanks: Listen to a recording and fill in missing words in a transcript.
      • Highlight Correct Summary: Listen and choose the summary that best reflects the recording.
      • Select Missing Word: Listen to a recording and select the missing word from a transcript.
      • Highlight Incorrect Words: Listen and identify words in a transcript that were pronounced differently in the recording.
      • Write from Dictation: Listen to a sentence and write it down exactly.
    • Purpose: Assesses your ability to understand spoken English, including different accents and contexts.

Scoring:

  • PTE scores range from 10 to 90. Each section is scored and the scores are combined to give an overall score.
  • The test uses automated scoring, which provides a detailed breakdown of your performance in each skill area.

The PTE is recognized by many educational institutions, employers, and governments around the world. It is often used for academic admissions, professional qualifications, and immigration purposes.
